Abstract

Family therapists have insisted on the importance of the so-called contextual analysis of the therapeutic setting during meetings with families. This position often brings us to work as much on the appearance as on the psychic reality of the subject. The use of narrative images and metaphors which create common areas of intersection between the family's systems of reference and those of the therapist often contains a potential for change and therapeutic improvement. How is this improvement possible? What is the intra-psychic meandering of these images? Finally are the reorganisations lasting or are they but appearance ? The setting within which these sessions of family therapy take place demonstrate the real potential of change connected with the use of the metaphors. Through their capacity of resonance and their evocative power they bring about the therapeutic system. They must be anchored within the auto-referential context of the family system and that of the therapist. This is the concept of resonance. Their declension must be adapted to the greatest number of persons present so as to allow meta-communication around transferential and counter-transferential elements. Finally they must have the capacity to include all the family's potentials : the pending ideals, the futures, the fears of annihilation or the hopes of rebirth. With the help of a clinical case, we try to analyse several strategic questions concerning the evolution of a therapeutic process. How does the metaphor come to the therapist? Is it born ofhis own unconcious and his intimate problems? Is it an intuition bornof the information gleaned during sessions through the filter of his empathy? Is it a co-construction of the therapist-family-system ? The irony is that the family therapist is sometimes confronted in his practice with the eternal plastonic question of the discovery of truth through the shadows of its representation.
