Abstract

The phase transitions occurring in hydrous, amorphous Cr(OH)(3) gel during its rapid, thermal dehydration in 1 atm of air and Ar have been monitored in situ by total electron-yield (TEY) XAS. Near-edge spectraprovide evidence for the oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI), and possiblyCr(V), during dehydration in both atmospheres. The oxidation reactionoccurs at temperatures between 200 degrees C and 300 degrees C. The extent of oxidation is larger in air, but still substantial in Ar. Thermal decomposition of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and the formation of ordered alpha-Cr2O3 require temperatures as high as 700 degrees C.
