Abstract

Changes of the surface state during the pretreatment of electroless nickelplating on magnesium alloys were studied using the weight loss method, scanning election microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that due to the formation of Mg(OH)(2) and MgF2 films on the surface, alkaline cleaning and activating made little attack on the substrate. Different etching solutions gave different etch rates and resultant morphologies. The CrOOH containing film, which was formed during etchingdisappeared after activation.
