Abstract

The role of feedforward-feedback brain-spinal cord interactions in sensorimotor integration in vertebrates was investigated using a neural network model representing the brain and multiple oscillatory spinal segments of the lamprey. Periodic perturbation was applied to the caudal most spinal segment. Perturbation analysis indicated that perturbation of the caudal end could entrain the locomotor rhythm locally, but in the presence of intact brain-spinal cord interactions the effects of the spinal perturbation are not propagated along the spinal cord thereby affecting intersegmental coordination. This prediction of the model was confirmed by experimental investigationin an in vitro brain-spinal cord preparation. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
