Abstract

Information theory is becoming increasingly important as a tool in neuroscience, both in theoretical and experimental studies. Models to which information theory has been applied generally use an extremely simplified description of the noise. Here the author shows that a biologically more plausiblenoise model, in which the neurons are described by renewal processes, yields results that are qualitatively different from those in the simpler models used up to now.
