Abstract

A Monte Carlo analysis is made of calcium dynamics and quantal secretion at active zones of varicosities and boutons following multiple channels opening under trains of action potentials. Endogenous fixed and mobile buffers are included, as are calcium pumps in the terminal walls. For a stimulationfrequency of 100 Hz there is considerable facilitation due to residual binding of calcium to vesicle-associated proteins and to an increase in the residual free calcium in the terminal, but this effect disappears for stimulation frequencies of less that 50 Hz, indicating that additional mechanisms are needed to explain the longer-lasting components of facilitation.
