Abstract

The total soluble nitrogen content in sugarbeets is closely related to theharmful nitrogen and to the total nitrogen in thick juice which already towards the end of the 19(th) century was recognized as determinative of the quality of the soluble nitrogen fraction in beets and their juices or for their technical quality. Serial measurement of this characteristic, which would allow sugarbeet breeders to act upon it, has so far nor been possible, so that the analytically more accessible alpha -amino-N is generally resorted to in beet quality analysis and evaluation as proxy for harmful nitrogen. However, this catchesonly part (on average, 34%) of the harmful nitrogen in beets, which is notalways representative of the total soluble nitrogen fraction and can lead to false conclusions, e.g, in variety assessments. This article presents an NIRS method whereby the total soluble nitrogen and also, indirectly, the broadly proportional harmful nitrogen can be determined in beet brei digest clarified with aluminium sulfate. The method is very quick (< 20 s per sample in commercially available flow cuvettes of 0.5 mm bed length), simple and environmentally friendly (without chemicals). A description is given of the NIRS measuring device employed (Infra-ProverII near-infrared interferometer with Fourier transform technology, made byBran + Luebbe, Norderstedt) and of setting up an individual calibration (transmission measurement with subsequent PLSR data analysis, reference method: gas chromatographic N-elementary analysis) as the basis of the analytical procedure presented.
