Abstract

Background: Cognitive dysfunctions and their neurophysiological and brain-structural correlates are key elements in the description of schizophrenia. It is suggested that neurocognitive deficits may even reflect the core of the disease: Objective and methods: The following qualitative review presents models and empirical evidence of the psychological and neuronal underpinnings of schizophrenic syndromes (reality distortion, disorganisation, negative symptoms) and of key symptoms (hallucinations, delusions, thought disorder, flat affect). Some integrative concepts (working memory deficit, filter deficit, dysconnectivity) explaining a broader spectrum of symptoms willalso be discussed. Results and conclusions: Despite of some inconsistencies in the data and of unresolved methodological problems it can be concludedthat the analysis of neurocognitive deficits provides a more comprehensiveunderstanding of the schizophrenic disease allowing for the development ofspecific psychological and pharmacological interventions.
