Abstract

Scalar mixing in turbulence is studied in this work from a dynamical pointof view. The joint evolution of different pairs of variables is investigated in their 2D phase planes. Using DNS data and taking conditional averagesin the transport equations at each point of a particular phase plane, a dynamical system is obtained. The result indicates the most probable evolution of a pair of variables, given the initial condition. This method, recently introduced for velocity gradient studies, is applied here to investigate the diffusion and dissipation processes of an inert scalar field in isotropic turbulence. Some results describing new insights into the effects of vorticity and strain on the local scalar variance and on the local scalar dissipation rate, using this technique, are also presented.
