Abstract

Plants regeneration from in vitro tissue culture is very important for ourprogramme to select drought-tolerant plants. In this study we examined theregeneration ability (including embryogenic potential) of twenty wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars to select high responding genotypes. For any cultivar, five culture characters were considered: rate of callogenesis, rate of germination, percentage of embryogenic calli, percentage of regeneration: and mean number of regenerated plants/callus (MNRP). Results show a large genotypic effect in the production of embryogenic callus, the rate of regeneration and the MNRP as well. Differences have been observed between varieties and seven out of the twenty tested genotypes showed good somatic embryogenesis and regeneration; their use is practical in further programme related to in vitro selection.
