Abstract

Acetylation of lignin-containing paper is known to inhibit light-induced yellowing, but the mechanism of this effect is not clearly understood. To address this problem, the effect of acetylation on the photodegradation of milled wood lignin (MWL) has been studied by high-performance size-exclusion chromatography and P-31 NMR spectroscopy, after irradiation with UV light. The results are consistent with the conclusion that acetylation, decreases the extent of photodegradation by stopping the cleavage of the beta -O-4 aryl ether groups, and thus prevents the production of phenoxy radicals and the chromophores derived from them, This effect depends on the media in which MWL was irradiated. However acetylation does not prevent interactions between MWL and solvent as well as production of hydroxyl groups in the solid state.
