Abstract

A method was developed and tested which allows the determination of vertical flux densities of reactive N and S species using the denuder-filter system KAPS (Kananaskis Atmospheric Pollutant Sampler) by application of the ratiometric method. The quasi-continuous determination offlux densities was achieved by classifying the exchange properties ofthe atmosphere using an on-line calculated atmospheric conductivity lambda which was used to actuate 6 pairs of KAPS. After optimization ofsampling and analytical procedures sufficient resolution of concentrations and concentration gradients could be ensured. Trial runs were carried out for weekly intervals during the vegetation period. The method showed to be suited well for routine measurements of flux densities of reactive N and S species. Most of the results obtained for cumulative fluxes and deposition velocities of gaseous SO2, HNO3, HNO2, HCl, NH3 as well as for SO42-,NO3-, Cl-, and NH4+ in aerosols agreed well with literature data.
