Abstract

Newly optimized conditions for the preparation of the optically active lanthanum-lithium-binaphthol and -binaphthol derivative complexes (LLB and LLB, respectively), efficient catalysts for asymmetric nitroaldol reactions, are shown to involve mixing of inexpensive LaCl3 . 7H(2)O, (R)-binaphthol (or its derivative) dilithium salt (2.7 mol equiv) and NaO-t-Bu (0.3 mol equiv) in THF at 50 degrees C. In the case of nitroaldol reactions using nitroalkanes other than nitromethane, the LLBand/or LLB thus obtained are shown to be effective in enhancing syn-selectivity in such reactions.
