Abstract

This paper presents an overview of current analytical methodologies for the separation and determination of benzene- and naphthalenesulfonates. We pay particular attention to electrophoretic procedures and only briefly review chromatographic methods. We describe the enrichment procedures developed to date and discuss the advantages and drawbacks of off-line and on-line enrichment. Another aspect that we focus on is capillary electrophoresis withlaser-induced fluorescence detection and phosphorescence detection for determining sulfonated aromatic compounds at low mug l(-1) levels and its recent combination with mass spectrometry to confirm the presence of these compounds in environmental samples. Finally, we review the applicability of themethods developed to environmental samples. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
