Abstract

In this article, the authors review the epidemiology of infectious diarrhea in the elderly, age-related changes in the intestinal physiology and immune system function, and some of the etiologic agents most commonly associated with infectious diarrhea in elderly patients. Although not classically considered to be infectious diarrhea, bacterial overgrowth is another cause in the elderly and also is discussed.
