Abstract

Several gases, such as NO and CO, and hydrocarbons, have been measured in exhaled air in adults and children (Fig. 1). More recently, non-volatile markers and mediators (hydrogen peroxide, isoprostanes, leukotrienes, prostaglandins, cytokines, products of lipid peroxidation, nitrite/nitrate, S-nitrosothiols, nitrotyrosine) have been detected in exhaled air and condensate. There is a strong rationale to use these exhaled markers to monitor airwayinflammation and oxidative stress in asthma and COPD, as well as during treatment with corticosteroids, leukotriene antagonists, antioxidants and novel therapies.
