Abstract

Alcohol research stands at an important crossroad is a major message of "Finding Paradigms for the Future of Alcoholism Research: Interdisciplinary Perspectives," by Roger Meyer, MID, in this issue of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research. The goal of alcohol research is not only to address the causes and consequences of alcohol abuse, including alcoholism, but also alcohol-involved problems, such as violence and trauma. Prevention and treatment of alcohol abuse and associated problems require something from all fields of scientific research. For a number of years, we have used wordslike "interdisciplinary" or "transdisciplinary" research to mean that "some day" alcohol researchers need to work together. The unfortunate reality, underscored by Roger Meyer, is that we are a long way from that goal in practice.
