Abstract

Textile and apparel manufactures and sellers, to distinguish themselves from competitors, seek to add value to their products for the consumer. One method to achieve this goal is product quality improvements. Uniformity of color quality and well-defined manufacturing color tolerances are essential. This statement seems simple, but the process can lead to problems unless tolerances are agreed to in frank discussions between the buyer and seller. To "live with" and enforce tolerances, they must be described in objective, measurable terms. By using basic statistical techniques, understanding metamerism, color difference systems, measuring systems, and dyeing process variables, a workable system between the buyer and seller can be established.
