Abstract

The dynamics of star grass with and without N fertilization (0 and 50 kg.ha(-1).cycle(-1)) from the 2(nd) to the 12(th) week of regrowth. was studiedin both seasons in a split plot design with 3 replications In each growth cycle. total dry matter yield (TDMY) and development of the assimilative system (DAS) were measured weekly. These were adjusted to 2(nd) and 3(rd) degree polynomial equations. Growth rate (GR), net assimilation rate (NAR) andendurance of the foliar area (FA) were estimated from the adjusted expressions according to the functional growth analysis method. No N x age interactions were found within season for TDMY. their maximum values were recordedfrom the 11(th) to the 12(th) week with 1.18, 2.89 t MS.ha(-1) in dry season and 2.73 and 5.37 t MS.ha(-1) during the rainy season. The N increased the GR to 0.360 t MS.ha(-1) in week 7 of the dry season and to 0.663 t MS.ha(-1) in week 5 of the rainy season, with no variation in the growth cycle. The DAS and the DFA showed similar results, 3.76. 5.92 and 3.46 in the 12(th) week of the dry and rainy season, respectively, On the other hand. the NAR showed contrasting results to DAS and DFA, with maximum values of 60.8 and 128.1 g.MS.m(2).week(-1) in the rainy season. The DAS and DFS were related to the TDMY in both nutritional profile and season. while relationships with the NAR were negative (P < 0.01). except with 50 kg N in the dry season. The best balance between these indicators for 50 kg N was obtained in the 5(th) and 7(th) week for both. rainy and dry seasons, respectively. and aweek later for no N. When nitrogen was not added, the growth process was less efficient (NAR). Further studies on the energy balance under controlledconditions are necessary.
