Abstract

Conventional Japanese timber structures built to half scale with various shear wall configurations were subjected to static load tests. In all phasesof testing, the same amount of shear wall with braces was used, so that only the influence of shear wall configurations was investigated. Numerical analysis was conducted on an elastic shear spring model, and static lateral deformations were predicted. Calculated values were then compared with the experimental values. The difference in deformation for each wall line with plywood sheathing covering all of horizontal diaphragms and shear walls in a symmetric configuration was small. In the case of asymmetrical shear wall configuration, eccentricity and wall line deformation was observed to be in a close relationship. The experimental deformation values were nearly in agreement with the calculated values. The difference in deformation for each wall line with plywood sheathing inthe center of horizontal diaphragms only was large because of the large shear deformation of the horizontal diaphragms. These experimental deformation values did not agree with the calculated values. However, the values calculated by the elastic shear spring model considering the bending of the beams were comparatively close to experimental values in case of the plywood sheathing only in the center of horizontal diaphragms only.
