Abstract

The problem of existence and stability of topological solitons in a polymer molecule having the conformation of a three-dimensional helix was solved numerically. In the framework of the model taking into account deformationsof chemical bonds, changes of torsion and bond angles, and interaction of neighboring chains, the existence of four types of local topological defects was shown using poly(tetrafluoroethylene) as an example. One of these defects exhibits the soliton dynamics. It can move along the chain as a solitary wave. This soliton has the velocity spectrum in the subsonic range. Pinning of other defects is observed. Their motion has a character of thermallyactivated random hopping. Existence of the four types of topological solitons is due to the helical conformation of the molecule. Simulation of the soliton dynamics shows that the revealed solitons are stable to thermal vibrations of the macromolecule.
