Abstract

Comprehensive description of cellular interactions is difficult, as these are highly nonlinear phenomena. Many RNA and protein molecules in the cell interact however via a "lock and key" mechanism. Description and search forspecific interacting structures can thus predict such interactions and reveal new ones. Results presented here include identification of new iron responsive elements (RNA), modelling of transferrin receptor homologues and neurotoxins as well as prediction of interactions of enzyme subunits (proteins). Algorithms discussed involve motif searches (RNA), homology modelling and ab initio predictions (proteins), genome screening and genome conservation (RNA and proteins).
