Abstract

The response of five species and varieties of the Cynodon genus (C. dactylon cv. Coastal, C. dactylon cv. Cross-1, C. dactylon cv. Cross-2,C. nlemfuensis cv. Panamanian and C. nlemfuensis cv. Jamaican to N fertilizer (0, 200 and 400 kg/ha/year), in a typical red ferrallitic soil during two years, by a factorial arrangement in a random block design with 4 replications, was studied. Crude protein increased (P < 0.01)with the N dosage and there were differences between pastures (P < 0.01), being bermuda grass Cross-1 and Panamanian star grass those of highest content (12.43 and 11.07%, respectively). Protein production showed similar performance and Panamanian star grass outstanded with values of 2213 and 1538 kg/ha for the first and second year, respectively. The P, Ca and Mg contents decreased (P < 0.05) with N, and K increased. N recovered was higher (P < 0.01) when 200 kg N were applied and species differed (P < 0.05) with a range of values between 42 and 65%. Nconversion in DM was higher when 200 kg N was fertilized, while the highest N extractions are produced with 400 kg N (with values of up to 200 kg/ha). Increasing N dosages improved the indicators in all pastures, although further studies are required.
