Abstract

[GRAPHICS]Analysis of the basic pi -aromatic (benzene) and antiaromatic (cyclobutadiene) systems by dissected nucleus-independent chemical shifts (NICS) shows the contrasting diatropic and paratropic effects, but also reveals subtleties and unexpected details.
