Abstract

The diffraction of acoustic waves from periodic solid-gas and hybrid surfaces in electric contact weld was modeled based on the Mode Matching Equation (MME) approach, and the stability and accuracy of solution is high and superior to the conventional Boundary Integral Equation (BIE) approach. The model is used to predict the spectrum of diffraction coefficients of periodic silver- gas saw-tooth interface as well as silver-gas mixed with a littlepart of silver-copper periodic surfaces. The results show that the minima in the spectrum of the reflection coefficient are mainly resulted from the mode conversion when ultrasonic waves impinge on the rough surfaces, but the minima will be weakened for the real weld hybrid profile. Therefore the predictions of the minima in the spectrum will help for improving the accuracy and reliability of ultrasonic testing.
