Abstract

We study the stability of the plane free surface of a shallow fluid in a vertical vibrated vessel with corrugated bottom. We find that localized standing surface waves can be excited under vibration at certain frequencies asa result of combined action of the Faraday instability and the Bragg-like resonant reflection. We show that the conditions of the excitation of the plane surface wave in such vessel change substantially. These changes are noticeable especially in the vessel in the form of two nested cylinders. We note effect of self-suppression of the Faraday instability in a vessel with a sandy bottom. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
