Abstract

The discovery of high-temperature superconductors (HTS) in 1987 opened newopportunities in the design of several power supply equipment. The advantages of a transformer with HTS windings have been discussed and represented in several papers in the past, The design of transformers depends on the operation requirements and the position in the power network. In this paper the fundamental equations for the design of transformers are discussed and modified in such a way that an optimisation of HTS transformers can be successfully studied. The best design for low volume and low losses is calculated for different transformer categories (50, 150, 300 MV A) considering the impedance voltage and the price for the HTS windings, The resulted growth laws are discussed and analysed.
