Abstract

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a significant cause of American adult morbidity and mortality. The pathophysiologic process of atherosclerosis has been shown to start early in childhood and progress to clinical disease. Hypercholesterolemia is an important modifiable risk factor for the disease andcan be detected in children, Cholesterol levels in childhood often predictcholesterol levels in adulthood. Therefore, the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) and subsequently the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have developed screening guidelines for children and adolescents. There are several treatment modes available for lowering cholesterol levels in pediatric patients. This paper reviews the etiologies of hypercholesterolemiain children and adolescents, evidence supporting the connection between cholesterol and CHD, the controversy surrounding cholesterol screening, and data on various treatment modalities, Directions for future research are suggested.
