Abstract

The aim of this report is to determine the most effective conditions for acontinuous solvent extraction circuit for the recovery of the vanadium component in fly ash derived from oil burning. The most suitable conditions necessary to leach vanadium ions from fly ash and to recover the vanadium (V)ions using tricaprylyl methyl ammonium chloride as a chelate agent were studied. The results are summarized as follows: the most effective concentration of aqueous ammonia solution was 25 g dm(-3) of NH4OH needed to leach vanadium ions from fly ash produced by oil burning. The most effective concentration of vanadium in the aqueous feed necessary to produce a raffinate having a small amount of vanadium ions was less than 2 g dm(-3). The retention time in the stripping process was more important than that in the extraction process, because of the longer period necessary to remove vanadium ionsfrom the organic phase. The vanadium component in the fly ash was successfully recovered by controlling the operating conditions of a continuous solvent extraction circuit which employed a series of mixer-settlers.
