Abstract

NA44 has measured midrapidity deuteron spectra from AA collisions at roots(nn) approximate to 18 GeV at the CERN SPS. Combining these spectra with published p, (p) over bar, and (d) over bar data allows us to calculate, within a coalescence framework, p and (p) over bar source sizes and phase spacedensities. These results are compared to pi (+/-) source sizes measured byHanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) interferometry and phase densities produced by combining pion spectra and HBT results. We also compare to pA results and tolower energy (AGS) data. The (p) over bar source is larger than the protonsource at roots(nn) = 17.3 GeV. The phase space densities of pi (+) and p are not constant but grow with system size. Both pi (+) and proton radii decrease with m(T) and increase with roots(nn). Pions and protons do not freeze out independently. The nature of their interaction changes as roots(nn) and the pi /p ratio increases.
