Abstract

Although Alzheimer's disease (AD) is clearly the dominant dementing disorder in the developed world, other dementing disorders often overlap with AD or occur completely independently. This article reviews the characteristicsof dementia associated with cerebrovascular disease, dementia associated with Lewy body pathology, and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Much of the conceptual basis of these disorders has changed in the past decade. Part of this evolution relates to an increased understanding of the pathophysiology of each of the disorders themselves. In addition, a growing understanding ofAD has allowed us to define better the distinctions and similarities between AD and the major non-AD dementias.
