Abstract

The anatomy of speech and language-related cortical areas will be reviewedwith an emphasis on neuroimaging methods that have been utilized to betterunderstand the anatomy and functional extent of critical speech-language areas. First, a brief historical review will be presented, with reference topostmortem studies. Second, the application of neuroimaging; methodologiesto language localization and hemispheric specialization in healthy adults will be discussed. Contributions from pneumoencephalography, computerized tomography (CT) scans, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will be emphasized. This article will refer to anatomical studies using volumetric MRI in greatest detail. Particular reference will be made to "critical" perisylvianspeech-language regions, including,a Broca's and Wernicke's areas.
