Abstract

Fibers consisting of polypropylene (PP) reinforced with nearly continuous fibrils of a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (TLCP) were spun usinga novel dual extruder process. Random mat and woven preforms were subsequently made and compression molded to form composite plaques at temperatures above the melting temperature of PP but below which the TLCP would lose molecular orientation. The mechanical properties of the plaques were compared with those of commercially available random continuous fiberglass and chopped fiberglass reinforced composites. Various factors were investigated including the degree of fill of the mold, the temperature and time of processing, and the formability of the preform. It was found that the wholly thermoplastic composite materials had similar mechanical properties to those of the glass reinforced materials but offered the advantages of lower density and a higher degree of formability.
