Abstract

Recurrent uveitis is one of the most frequent ophthalmologic changes of horses, In spite of this, many times it is difficult for the practising veterinarians to diagnose and differentiate from other changes, especially from keratitis, The authors review the scientific literature concerning the pathophysiology and etiology of equine recurrent uveitis (iridocyclochorioiditis). On the basis of scientific Literature it can be stated that the etiology is not absolutely clear. The original statement of BERRAR and MANNINGER that in the development of the clinical picture leptospiras have a major role was supported by later research,The authors give full details with the mention of data of literature of the acute and chronic, remaining clinical signs of the disease. Clinical signs are illustrated with photos of own cases. They detail the examination of horses suffering from recurrent uveitis, the conduction anaesthesia making easier the examination and the applicable examination methods. They consider ultrasonic examination as an important complementary examination method. Recurrent uveitis is a severe change, threatening the vision, requiring an urgent, pressing intervention and demanding intensive therapy. In connection with the treatment they present the medicines and methods of treatment used by them effectively, presenting also a modern surgical intervention showing promise and used routinely also by them, the vitrectomy. They finish with the presentation of the prognosis and the legal and sale and purchase aspects of the remaining signs. As the popular,,moon blindness" expression does not suggest an exact diagnosis they recommend the use of the exact and correct technical term, equine recurrent serous; plastic; haemorrhagic iridocyclochorioiditis in the ophthalmologic certificates.
