Abstract

We now have a good understanding of surface states on metal surfaces and anumber of occupied and unoccupied surfaces states on low index faces of metal single crystal have been well characterized. Recently a new optical technique, reflection anisotropy spectroscopy (RAS), has been shown to be sensitive to surface states. The RAS technique is briefly described and experimental spectra obtained from the Cu(110) surface are presented. Changes in the RAS of Cu(110) as a result of thermal processing and the induction of the Cu(110) 2x1 phase transition by the deposition of Na can be understood interms of the associated changes in surface states.
