Abstract

The adsorption structure of ethylene (C2H4) and ethynyl (C2H) on Pd(110) is studied with the near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS) and scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The adsorption site of these molecules isdetermined on the basis of the STM image analysis. From the polarization and azimuth dependence in NEXAFS spectra, the orientations of these adsorbedmolecules are determined. The alignment of the C-C bond is different between these molecules. The C-C bond aligns along (1 (1) over bar0) for the adsorbed ethylene and that aligns along (001) for the adsorbed ethynyl. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science BN. All rights reserved.
