Abstract

When early in European:history learning and internal renewal were closely associated With aging, the way for the Western idea of spiritual as well aspsychological maturescence in the life course was opened up. Present improved material and health chances are lacking spiritual and philosophical orientations in and for aging. In addition, pressures for a special status andsupport of the elderly paradoxically coexist with trends towards age-irrelevance and age-neglect. In view of such paradoxes the strengthening of the individual "locus of control" appears to be crucial for 'creative disinhibition" and a goal-orientation in higher age. Late life culture however may be furthered by inter- and intragenerational initiatives.
