Abstract

Method requirements for the characterization of stationary phases are established. The completeness of the method and the influence of a mixed retention mechanism involving both solvation and adsorption on characteristic phase parameters are discussed. The performance of the retention and the solvation parameter model for the characterization of stationary phases is compared. Stationary phases are characterized in the retention model by retention data measured for prototypical substances, and in the solvation parametermodel by explanatory regression coefficients found by a statistical method. A new approach is proposed which combines the advantages of the retentionand the solvation model. The low proton acidity of low molecular weight polyethylene glycol phases has been found with the combined model.
