Abstract

The histological study of the digestive system and of the swim bladder wascarried out on Solen senegalensis from hatching to 48 days-old juveniles. At hatching, the digestive tract, straight and uniformous in diameter, was undifferentiated and closed (the alimentation is exclusively endogenous). The liver and the pancreas were present but only as undifferentiated cells. The active larval period started 2 days after hatching and the nutrition becomes mixed since the opening of the mouth (3rd day). The oesophagus was differentiated from the 3rd day with the appearance of the mucus cells, but the stomach was not completely differentiated. At this time, we can distinguish a differentiated liver, pancreas and gall bladder. The glycogen was stored in the liver from the 8th day onward. At the 9th day (beginning of the metamorphosis), the digestive muscles were strongly developed, the anus hadmigrated forwards and the swim bladder is inflated. The digestive glands appeared by the 18th day.
