Abstract

The similarity of two target flavors (A and B) was assessed in rats by measuring generalized aversion from A to B. Experiment 1 showed that pairing the target stimuli with differential events (AX/BY) prior to poisoning of A makes the target stimuli more discriminative than does pairing the target stimuli with a common event (AX/BX). Experiments 2A and 3 demonstrated that pairing of X and Y after such distinctiveness training reduces the distinctiveness effect, and Experiment 2B gave some validity on our generalized aversion technique. These results indicate that putting X and Y together afterthe AX/BY distinctiveness training reintegrates A and B and enhances the generalization between A and B. Several accounts of this finding are discussed. (C) 2001 Academic Press.
