Abstract

Saccadic reaction times depend strongly on fixation offset target onset asynchrony in simple step tasks. The aim of this study was to investigate to what degree saccadic latency is influenced by top down and bottom up processes. Three experiments were performed. First, a part ofthe pioneering work of Saslow (1967) was successfully replicated. A separate express-saccade peak, first described by Fischer & Ramsperger (1986), was found in 3 out of 6 subjects. Second, an additional discrimination stimulus was introduced either at fixation or at target in order to manipulate the engagement/disengagement of attention. Results showed a reliable but minor influence of higher cognitive processes on saccadic reaction time. Finally blockwise presentation of trials was compared with mixed presentation. Differences were found only for long latency saccades. By far the strongest influence on saccadic latency was caused by a gap between fixation offset and target onset. It is concluded that bottom up processes exert a far stronger effect on saccadic latency than top down influences. The results are best explained by the three loop model of Fischer (1987).
