Abstract

Severe hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are uncommon primary causes for admission to the intensive care unit, but are significantly associated withmortality rates if not recognized and treated appropriately In this article, following an initial review of thyroid physiology and thyroid testing, the pathogenesis, clinical presentations, and treatments of thyroid storm and myxedema coma are reviewed.
