Abstract

Aracruz Celulose (Brazil) carried out a project to increase the pulp production of 1.24 million tons per year of bleached eucalyptus pulp, which included building a new causticizing plant (8100m(3)/day) that used both green and white liquor filtration technology. In addition to the operational benefits to the causticizing process, the decision to install green-liquor filtration was done with the intent to prepare the chemical- recovery system toclose up the effluent cycle. The industrial results were very close to that of pilot plant and literature data. Six months after start-up, results showed significant reductions of dregs and non-process elements in the liquorcycle: Al (30%), Mg(99%), Mn(85%), Cu(25%) and Fe(55%), indicating that the filtration green-liquor plant is a recommended way to close up and optimize the effluent cycle.
