Abstract

A generalized van der Waals model of nematic mixtures of biaxial molecules(parallelepipeds of the D-2h symmetry) interacting according to the rectangular well potential was formulated. For systems consisting of rodlike and platelike species, specific features of the phase diagrams and the problem of resistance of the biaxial phase to separation into two nematic phases with uniaxial symmetry were discussed.
