Abstract

Ears of two winter wheat cultivars, 'Regina' and 'Zdar', differing in metabolic reaction to aphid Feeding were examined for the contents of free polyamines and their soluble and insoluble conjugates at three different developmental stages of anthesis. In ears infested by Sitobion avenae (F.) at thestage of anthesis complete aphid dry mass was significantly higher (P < 0.5 in 'Regina' and P < 0.01 in 'Zdar') than that produced at earlier developmental stages. No significant differences either in aphid number or aphid dry mass per ear were found between 'Regina' and 'Zdar'. Aphid feeding influenced the total polyamine (PA) content in ears of both cultivars but no marked differences were observed between studied cultivars. The most significant changes occurred in the pool of free PAs. The amounts of soluble conjugates did not change significantly in ears of 'Regina' whereas slight decrease of these PA Forms was found in 'Zdar'. The contents of insoluble conjugates remained more or less the same after ear infestation. These results are discussed in relation to resistance of tested cultivars to aphids.
