Abstract

The thyroid hormone levels in blood plasma, egg, embryonic development andlarvae in Catla catla were analyzed by radio immunoassay. Higher levels ofthyroxin (T-4) and triiodothyronine (T-3) were recorded in plasma during previtellogenic and vitellogenic phases, indicating their major involvement during gonadal recrudescence and development. Significant amount of both the hormones (T-4 and T-3) of maternal origin was present in the fertilized eggs and the levels decreased during embryonic development in Catla catla. The T-4 level started increasing prior to completion of yolk absorption, suggesting that larval thyroid gland had begun to produce T-4 (onset of thyroxinogenesis). In larvae a distinct surge of thyroid hormones was observed during 9-day-old larvae, indicating its major role in organ differentiation during early larval stages of Catla catla.
