Abstract

An aperture antenna with a triplate transmission line structure generates undesirable power (PPM power) inside the transmission line. To suppress thePPM power, this paper presents an aperture antenna backed by a cavity. Theeffects of the cavity on the radiation characteristics are revealed by using the finite-difference time domain method. it is found that PPM power is controlled by changing the depth of the cavity. When the cavity depth is approximately a quarter wavelength, the input power concentrates near the aperture area and radiates into free space. Further investigation is performedfor a two-element aperture array backed by cavities. It is found that the cavities are effective for suppressing mutual coupling (S-21) between the two aperture elements. Finally, an eight-element array backed by cavities isdesigned to obtain a tilted beam of approximately 20 degrees. (C) 2000 Scripta Technica.
