Abstract

Analysis using high performance liquid chromatography indicated a significantly decreased level of glutamate in the superior cervical ganglia (SCG) of equine grass sickness (GS) cases compared with normal. Immunohistochemistry was used to investigate the distribution of glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) and glutamine synthetase (GlnS) in ganglia. In normal ganglia, GLDH was found in the perikarya of principal neurones and nerve fibres and in very small satellite cells closely apposed to neuronal perikarya. The highest concentration of GlnS was found in satellite cells but principal neuronal perikarya showed a low intensity reaction with anti-GlnS. In ganglia from GS cases, many principal neuronal perikarya had a decreased levels of GLDH. Manyperikarya had detached from GlnS-containing satellite cells.
