Abstract

The mucociliary system is responsible for maintaining the airways clean ofinhaled particles and pathogens. This task is performed by ciliated cells that transport the mucus from the lungs to the upper airways. The energy transferred by the cilium to the mucus blanket is proportional to the square of the ciliary beat frequency (CBF), hence CBF has a profound effect on theefficiency of mucociliary clearance and impairment of ciliary activity maylead to severe pathological conditions by jeopardizing mucociliary clearance. Extracellular ATP is one of the most potent activators of ciliary beating. It acts through purinergic receptors located on the cell surface. Ciliary stimulation is achieved by means of elevation in intracellular calcium concentration and activation of protein kinases. This article outlines the mechanism of purinergic ciliary stimulation revealed to date. (C) 2000 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
