Abstract

King Lear has long attracted Marxist or left-wing critics, not least because of its horrified vision of inequality. But Lear is also a play about defeat and how to think about defeat-and as such has timely lessons for today's left, which seems utterly routed by the ideology of ultraliberal, laissez-faire capitalism. This article argues two things. First, that Lear challenges some characteristic Marxist ways of thinking, in particular the practice of a certain rationalistic critique; second, that despite its challenge to left thought, the play is especially illuminated by a committed approach focusing on its social content. This approach shows that Lear is ultimatelya play of radical social hope.
